Patterson stood up for Benicia
by Kathy Kerridge
from the Vallejo Times Herald

I would like to thank the Benicia City Council for putting the safety of Benicia first by denying Valero’s Crude by Rail project. It was the right thing to do and I applaud the council for their vote.

I would particularly like to thank Mayor Patterson for her leadership. From the beginning she expressed concerns about safety, starting with an op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle. She continued to keep the public up to date with her e-alerts. She withstood a great deal of criticism for saying that there could be problems. The city attorney went so far as to say she should not vote on the project. The city attorney also hired an outside counsel, at taxpayer expense, to investigate the mayor’s e-alerts, where she provided unbiased information about crude by rail to her constituents. Never one to give up her rights or the rights of others. Mayor Patterson hired her own attorney, at great personal expense, to protect her free speech rights and her right to vote on this issue.

This action not only allowed her to vote, but helped protect the right of public officials everywhere to help educate the public about projects before them, without forfeiting their right to vote or speak. Mayor Patterson is willing to fight for her beliefs and our freedom of speech. She deserves our support in this election.
