Subject: Mountain Lion - Benicia PD Press Release
Date: 2008-04-18

A recently reported mountain lion sighting has prompted the Benicia Police Department to remind residents what to do if they see such an animal.

About two or three times a year the department receives a call that a mountain lion has been spotted. Most recently, Valero security personnel reported a possible sighting on company property in addition to subsequently finding a deer carcass. This sighting has been reported to the California Department of Fish and Game as they have jurisdiction over mountain lions sightings.

Benicia's open space is attractive to animals such as mountain lions in search of a food source. There has been no contact between a mountain lion and any Benicia resident, but citizens who think they have spotted a mountain lion should call the Benicia Police Department at (707)745-3412 to report the sighting. For additional information, citizens can log onto the Department of Fish and Game website at www.dfg.ca.gov and the attached link provides information on what to do if an mountain lion is encountered:
