Subject: New Mills Community Center Update Information

Several important dates should be noted for the process of the conversion of the Mills Elementary school to the City's Community Center. Staff continues to solicit stakeholders' views and suggestions for uses, design and neighborhood concerns.
This Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at 6:30 PM the Parks and Recreation and Cemetery Commission will hear an update on the process. The PDF documents below include the staff report(also available at http://www.ci.benicia.ca.us/). Included in the staff report is the proposed schedule for more meetings including a specific neighborhood meeting and review by other commissions and finally the future approval by the city council. Also attached is the proposed layout of the uses for the community center.
These meetings are important for the public to attend so that the public's ideas and concerns are fully explored and considered. Some of the biggest issues are: adequate facility for an arts room with counter, sinks (for washing brushes and so forth) and hard floor; opportunities for all age groups and non "recreation" activities such as senior driver training, perhaps Benicia Emergency Response Training (BERT) classroom and so on; young adult activities; neighborhood concerns of traffic and noise (especially on weekends and in the evening); and consideration of the relocation of the entrance to direct traffic and parking away from K and L Street. Staff is making a good effort to reach out to the public and incorporate the results of this input into the final plans.
